Morpeth Sunday League MKM Challenge Cup

Amble Reserves got back to winning ways after surrendering their 15 month unbeaten league run in December by producing a solid Challenge Cup performance against Bedlington Station at Gallagher Park "Both teams produced good performances today and our opponents made a real contest of the game. The players needed a match after the Christmas break and I'm pleased with the result and the quality of football on display," said manager Ryan Jobson.

In a match that thrust teammate against teammate and the unusual combination of father against son, both teams exhibited good passing and movement in the opening stages. The homeside more than held their own in the first quarter but Amble broke the deadlock after 16 minutes. Craig Kielty found Chris Connor in midfield who then played his co-striker Andy Timson through to record the club's first goal of 2008.

The Seasiders produced an assured defensive display with Barry Paton and Michael Straker dominant in the centre with Lee Megson and Dominic Toman on the flanks. The visitors enjoyed the better possession throughout the game and almost extended the lead when a shot by Connor was brilliantly saved by Station keeper Mathew Leonard. The Seasiders pressed forward with Timson and Connors threatening in front of goal and Lee Megson produced a thunderous 35yard shot that smacked against the post after 40 minutes.

David Smith slotted into the fullback position by replacing the injured Kielty at halftime as the visitors benefited from playing the second half with wind assistance. Amble keeper David Hanson had a quiet day at the office being rarely troubled by the visitors attack. The homeside continued to frustrate the visitors with the experienced Steve Timson organising the Station defence in a highly competitive fixture. The visitors reshuffled midfield of  Megson, John Robson, Carl Sayer and Ethan Miller pressed forward to extend the Seasiders' single goal advantage as the homeside twice threatened on the break.

Amble had several second-half opportunities with Andy Timson firing a tremendous 30yard shot that Leonard brilliantly tipped round the post after 75 minutes. Leonard was back in action with another great save from a Megson header and the keeper again denied Andy Timson with another fine save after 80 minutes. The Seasiders extended the lead five minutes later when Straker played Andy Timson through to outpace the defence to score his and Amble's second goal of the match.
